What is a FibroScan®?

A FibroScan® is a non-invasive procedure used to assess your liver health by measuring the velocity of the sound wave passing through the liver (transient elastography) to determine the amount of fat (steatosis) and scarring (fibrosis) in your liver. The FibroScan® is painless and easy. You will feel a slight vibration on the skin at the tip of the probe.

Who would benefit from a liver scan?

Many of us know that excess alcohol can damage the liver but what’s less well known is that our diet and lifestyle can also affect our liver health. Eating more calories than we need and leading an inactive lifestyle is a major reason for this. Each of these factors are also affecting our liver health and can cause a condition called Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease or NAFLD. If you have Type 2 diabetes or have high fasting glucose levels, are overweight, have heart disease or high cholesterol levels you might benefit from knowing more about your liver health. The good news is that there are steps that you can put in place to help reverse the early signs of a fatty liver, before significant damage and disease develops.

Why do I want to learn more about my liver health?

A healthy liver is important for your long-term health. The liver plays a key role in many body functions including the processing of nutrients such as sugar, proteins and fats. It is also important in the detoxification of drugs and the making of substances for blood clotting. If you can identify early stages of liver inflammation e.g. due to having a fatty liver, you can work to help reverse the damage or prevent it getting worse.

What is NAFLD?

Non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a condition whereby there is too much fat built up in the liver. If left untreated, it can progress to serious liver problems, diabetes, heart attacks and strokes. It can range from hepatic fat accumulation (steatosis) to steatohepatitis (fat accumulation with inflammation), fibrosis, cirrhosis, and end-stage liver disease.

What can I expect from a liver scan?

This non-invasive test takes no more than 15 minutes and is conducted in a private room by a qualified professional. Our expert team will be able to talk through the results immediately after the scan. A full report will be sent to the recipient shortly afterwards and a follow up call with our Nutritionist can be arranged if required.

What happens during the liver scan part of the consultation?

You will lie down on your back and with your right arm raised behind your head on our bed plinth in the consultation room. Our qualified technician will apply a small amount of gel to your right side of your abdomen and place the probe with slight pressure against your skin. Eight consecutive measurements will be made at the same location. It is completely painless and all you will feel is a gentle buzzing on your skin.

When will I get my results?

Initial results will be immediate, however a more comprehensive, medically endorsed report, will be sent to you within 7 days of your scan. If necessary we can also arrange a follow up call with our nutritionist.

How often should I get a liver scan completed?

This will vary depending on the result obtained from your liver scan, your overall general health and the consultation evaluation. The recommendation for any repeat scan will be provided in the follow up results.

Do I need to fast overnight before my scan?

No, you don’t need to fast overnight, just 3 hours directly before your scan is scheduled.

Can I have a FibroScan® if I am pregnant?

If you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant, we would ask that you get a referral from your doctor before booking with us.

What is the difference between a FibroScan® and other types of imaging?

Ultrasound scans can be useful in detecting top line changes in liver health however a FibroScan® is far superior, taking 10 readings, to identify liver scarring and an accurate fatty liver reading.

Unlike a CT scan the FibroScan® doesn’t use any radiation and is more suited to clients who may suffer from anxiety or claustrophobia.
